I recommend “Hydroponic food production: A definitive guidebook of soilless food growing methods” which you can buy online from Amazon or other book stores. It is available from Woodbridge Press and has ISBN # 0880071540.
Go to Amazon.com and search for that ISBN.

I think you’re halfway there to answering your own question. Why don’t you try using large glass jars, the largest you can find, with surgical tubing to transfer (circulate) water and air? You can buy an inexpensive pump either from half.com or ebay. Rig something up that lets you place nutrients in one container to be filtered to another. Or just use your sweat equity, and dump the chemicals in yourself. For instance, did you know that diluted urine is rich in nitrates, which is great fertilizer for plants? Your own body produces wastes which can provide the nutrients to a system. I wouldn’t use the feces myself, considering the practical difficulties involved. Of course, if you’re in a confined space, you might want to try other things, like coffee grounds and used tea bags.

Create drainage holes in bottom, add light stone such as lava rock, add a drip irrigation system on a pump with timer. Add seedlings, select nutrients for irrigation system and place in good light as required for most plants like tomatoes.
