The car will only run off the battery at very low speeds. If the car were to only run off the battery you might get a few blocks before the hybrid battery is drained. The gas engine is being used as a generator at times to keep the electric motors running. This is normal for your vehicle to only turn off at stop lights or downhill. when going downhill the electric motor is being used as a generator to charge the hybrid battery. There is no way to tell you when the battery needs to be replaced but I can tell you that your car will have a hybrid warning light (similar to check engine light) when there is a problem in that system.
