Home Changes for Global Warming Prevention

October 20th, 2007 largie Posted in Global Warming 1 Comment »

There are many changes that we can make in our homes in order to prevent global warming. In order to reduce the rate of damage that is occurring as a result of global warming, we must be willing to do our part. Many people go all out & change as much as they can in order to prevent global warming. Other people only make a change or two. It doesn’t matter how much change you make, as long as you’re trying. Everything helps a little. Of course, more is better… If you’re not able to implement all of the tips that are listed in this article, that is ok. Just pass the information along & see what a difference that we can all make by working together.

1) The first thing that you can do to change your home in order to prevent global warming is to make certain that you’re using light bulbs & appliances that are considered energy efficient. Using standard light bulbs & appliances that are not energy efficient will only lead to the issue of global warming getting worse. If you’re unable to afford the expense of replacing all the light bulbs in your home at once, start with the ones that are used the most & then move on to the rest as you’re able to afford it.

2) The next step to changing your home in order to assist in preventing global warming is to ensure that you do not run any unnecessary water. You should turn the water off as you’re washing dishes, make certain that you only run a dishwasher & a washing machine when you have full loads, do not fill the tub all the way up when you’re taking a bath, turn off the water as you’re brushing your teeth, & keep your showers short & sweet. You may also want to limit the amount of water that you use in order to provide moisture to the grass, & fill up swimming pools & spas in the home.

3) If you run an air conditioner and/or heaters, you should attempt to use a thermostat whenever it’s possible. This will help save a load of money on your heating & cooling costs. Clear? It will also help reduce the amount of harmful gases that enter in the atmosphere & result in the issue of global warming. Do you follow? Try to keep the thermostat around the upper seventy scale. It’s also very important to ensure that the vent filters in your home are kept cleaned & changed on a regular basis.

4) You should attempt to reduce the amount of trash that is produced in your home. You can do this by learning to recycle products for use in the home, or recycle them in your community. You can also reduce trash by ensuring that you limit the purchases of items that contain a lot of unnecessary garbage that you’ll end up throwing away.

5) If it’s possible, share a ride with another co-worker or with your spouse so that you do not produce car emissions or polution. Besides the benefits already mentioned, you’ll also save on the purchase of gasoline & will have company on your trip. On the weekends plan your schedule so you use only one car to do all of your errands. Again this saves gas & cuts down on the polution.

6) If you have the space, grow some of your own food. Fresh vegetables are better for you & if you grow them yourself, you’ll not have to buy them at the grocery store. You’ll also save on gas & time because they will be within walking distance. If you have a “bumper crop”, you can always can or freeze them so you’ll have them during the colder months. You can also recycle the “waste products” (skins, tops, etc.) which you would usually throw away to make compost material.

These are just a few things you can do at home which will help lessen the ill effects on our environment. As mentioned above, start with 1 or 2 as you have the time or can afford them. Then continue to add more as time goes by. If we all do just a few of these things, then the cumulative effect will start tipping the scales of global warming toward the good end.

Global Warming- How are Animals Affected by Global Warming   by Kelvin Ho

October 15th, 2007 largie Posted in Global Warming No Comments »

It isn’t a secret that we humans have been destroying the environment for years. Clear? It’s now that some of us are trying to make all people aware of the affects that our lack of care has had on the environment & what will happen if we do not make changes now & attempt to stop the progress of global warming.

Our focus, or drive, is the thought of what type of world are we leaving our children. We also need to be looking at how global warming is affecting our animals now & in the future if we do not stop & make the needed environmentally safe changes.

There are numerous studies that are being conducted & have been conducted where watching animal behavior & traits to measure the status of the environment. These studies are showing that our Earth is changing in unnatural ways & it’s disturbing. Do you follow? Think about the fact that right now as things stand, reindeer will no longer wander the places they currently do, they will disappear.

Marmots no longer hibernate the same amount of time that they used to. Actually compared to thirty years ago, they’re ending hibernation three weeks earlier. The Canadian red squirrel is breeding 18 days earlier. Studies are showing that the red fox is moving north & invading the territory of its Arctic cousin. Polar bears are not as healthy as they were twenty years ago & they’re thinner.

If we look at the sea & our creatures there we also see changes that should cause alarm. Coral reefs are expected to increase by up to a third in size. Elephant seal pups are thinner because their prey is migrating to cooler waters. Our turtles are changing behavior as well, the loggerhead is laying eggs ten days earlier & the Hawkbill turtle hatchlings are having more females then males due to temperature changes.

Birds are changing their diets to insects that do not consume leaves that have been treated with high amounts of pesticides. Right. What does all of this mean? It means that global warming is going to cause many of our animal species to become endangered if not extinct.

The melting ice, the warm seas, the spreading dessert are all threats to our animals. There is more. These changes, no matter how subtle have a dramatic influence on the lives of our wildlife. In the sea the disappearance of the tiny organisms that the larger creatures feed off of is causing the sea life to migrate northward.

Keeping in mind that global warming plays a enormous part in our weather & climate, the increased storminess destroys the breeding colonies of the albatross that already battle the possibility of being captured & killed by fishing boats. There is more. The rise in sea levels wipe out the nesting sites of the sea turtles, seals & wading birds are also on the list of species to be affected by their habitats being destroyed.

Thought the very source of nature is change, & adaptation, the changes that are taking place in our environment due to global warming are just happening to fast. The speed is what makes it hard for the animals to adapt effectively & this will cause us to loose a lot of our wildlife. Can you imagine a world with no reindeer? What about the day that the Sahara dessert covers all of Africa & makes migration impossible for birds?

These are changes that we can see everyday & we need to start paying attention to them. The predicted elevation of sea level by an amazing three feet coupled with the disruptions to the Earth’s life support systems should be our wake up call.

While you can look out your back window & see these changes taking place, the full effect will be seen by the year 2100 if the predictions of scientist come through & we do not change our ways. There is more. Think about is, 2100 is less then one hundred years away. You & I would probably not actually be here, but our grandchildren will & what will we have left for them? Help stop global warming, do your part to save the Earth, our children & our wildlife. They need us.

Global Warming - Impact On Coastal Communities

October 10th, 2007 largie Posted in Global Warming No Comments »

Global warming is highly controversial. There’re many studies & reports being generated to support both sides of the argument. One argument states that global warming isn’t the massive global issue it’s purported to be. While the other argument clearly shows evidence that global warming is occurring & it’s a large problem. In order to understand the reports on global warming it’s important to establish what the global warming theory really is. Global warming is the increase in average temperature both in surface air & oceans. Another section of global warming is considered the greenhouse effect.

The greenhouse effect shows that the increase in temperature is leading to a lower atmosphere. The greenhouse effect supports the thought that the ozone is being affected by the rise in carbon dioxide & methane. The above are generalizations about both theories in order to simplify it & answer further questions. The rise in temperature is affecting coastal communities. It’s important to understand how coastal communities & residential & commercial real estate values in low-lying areas will be affected, when, how, & prevention methods.

The Environmental Protection Agency, Consad Research Corporation, NRCM, & IPCC are just a few of the environmental research companies studying global warming. In a recent study completed by the IPCC the prediction that global warming will have a significant impact on coastal communities was found. Global warming is melting the ice on the Earth’s surface. Places such as Antarctica, Greenland, Alaska, Alps, Andes, & the Rockies are seeing an increase in their receding glaciers. Glaciers around the world are receding around one foot to one mile per year. The melting water is flowing into our water systems increasing the elevation of seawater. The IPCC found that seawater levels have increased 4-5 inches since 1900. They are also predicting that sea levels will rise at least 2.5 feet by 2100.

The first part of global warming is the climate change. With the climate change we will be experiencing an increase in temperature around 1 degree Celsius to 5.5 degrees Celsius by 2100. Other effects of climate change include having varying weather patterns. Hurricanes, snowstorms, & rainfall have been increasing in certain areas around the world. Each time an increase in the amount of rainfall or snowfall occurs we’re gaining more water. While it’s true that evaporation will take care of some of this extra rainfall & plants will help take in the water we will still see an increase of water levels. The other side of this is creating warmer drier areas. Places like the desert will become drier from the higher temperatures. It’s also true in some areas that coral reefs are becoming visible on the surface because of evaporation.

There are many proposed plans for preventing an increase in temperatures & water levels. The Supreme Court in California has proposed stricter regulations on car emissions. CO2 emissions from cars are just part of the pollution problem creating the greenhouse effect. The burning of fossil fuels & land use are creating changes in the carbon dioxide levels. Studies have revealed that carbon dioxide has increased by 31%. Cutting down the rainforests have created more carbon dioxide to be in the Earth’s atmosphere due to a lack of plants to soak up the available carbon dioxide.

With the burning of fossil fuels, car emissions, & lack of plant life in some areas the carbon dioxide will keep increasing. To stop this increase we’re trying to create environmentally friendly cars, establishing stricter regulations on current automobiles, replanting forests, & changing to natural gases to avoid burning fossil fuel. The question will this be enough, is hard to answer. While we may reduce carbon dioxide production, once we start a chain of events it’s hard to ascertain if we can stop it.

As individual persons we can stop driving our cars for the littlest things. In other words we can become more economic in the uses of our resources. We can use less energy or at least create energy efficiency in our personal lives, we can also recycle goods. Natural product use is another idea  in order to eliminate more carbon dioxide production.

The coastal communities that will be affected are those in low altitude areas. The Caribbean, North Carolina’s Outer Banks, Japan, & other Asian countries will be affected. The best protection for these coastal communities will be stopping the increase of sea level. In other cases, sea walls or retaining walls can be built to help keep the water from reaching the homes, storefronts, & our lives. Dredging to reduce sea level & increase landmass will need to be done in every country that will be affected. The last option is moving. People may have to abandon their homes to save their lives from rising levels & storms.

Cutting down carbon dioxide emissions, bringing awareness to individual persons regarding global warming, & monitoring the Earth’s changes will help save the coastal communities. Part of the affect will be in the land values & investments in coastal communities. Right. While the land values are not decreasing at the moment there is every possibility that in fifty years there will be a decrease in land values due to an increase in insurance rates. Insurance companies are not going to want to insure homes for a reasonable cost when the sea level increases to a higher danger; therefore people will not want to purchase land in a danger zone.
