run it through a magnet to sort ferrous material then a crusher chopper then through a series of microwave emitters and thermal cameras it should be possible sort by temp according to the frequency of the emitter.

You’ve invested time and money into getting a PCR bottle; you’ve avoided BPA & PVC, and have selected a container that works well in the recycling stream.   You may have even gone so far as to choose a white, clear or black container color so that it won’t contaminate the recycling stream (yes, black is a high demand color for PCR so it isn’t necessarily a bad choice).  Bravo, you’ve done your part…or have you? 
What could I possibly have missed you ask?  Decoration! Will you screen print this container, foil stamp or label it? What’s your best choice for the environment? Let’s discuss the options.
Screen printing- less material=less waste=more eco-friendly packaging right?  Not necessarily.  We’re finding that screen inks are often a red flag during plastic container sorting, or worse yet don’t get sorted out at all.  When this occurs there is a risk of contaminating or ‘tinting’ the recycling material.  This creates a lower quality recycled plastic container.   Ink removal also becomes a problem.  The very thing that attracts us to screen printed inks is the very reason why we might not want to use them- the ink adheres too well!
What about foil stamping?  There is no doubt that foil adds pop and shelf appeal to a container but is it ‘recyclable’?  Well, the folks with FSEA (Foil Stamping & Embossing Association) say that because there are no solvents, inks or vapors in foils it breaks down just fine in a landfill.  (http://www.fsea.com/Designersclub/DCenvironment.htm) If this is truly the case then foil stamping may be a viable option if you’re looking to create a container that will end up in a landfill but if you’re designing for recyclability however there are concerns that foil does contaminate regrind material.
So direct decoration is out…what are the other options?  Sleeves (shrink sleeves) are a great choice- sleeves printed on corn-based PLA or Eastman’s Embrace shrink films can be easily removed from plastic containers and discarded with other waste material.   To be effective however sleeves generally need to cover a large area (close to 100% of a container), thus increasing the amount of material you’ll need to source and… throw away!
All of this leads us to my preferred decoration method… labels!  “But labels have adhesive!” you say.  “Doesn’t adhesive gum up the works in a regrind operation?”  “Aren’t labels difficult to remove in a conventional recycling plant?  The answers to these questions are yes, yes, and yes, but… there are options that make this one of the most attractive decorating options. 
To understand how adhesive selection can affect this process one must first understand the plastic recycling process.
Plastic containers are recycled using several methods and a complete discussion here would chew up a dozen or more pages.  In a nutshell, there are generally three basic stages to this process:  Stage 1- Containers are sorted; Stage 2- Containers are ground into flake (also called regrind), labels and all, and the ‘lighter’ particles are blown or vacuumed out; Stage 3- Washing with water and chemicals to remove contaminants; Stage 4- additional air/vacuum separation, and drying; and, Stage 5- melting of the regrind and extruding this material through screens to filter out any left over, non plastic materials.
The wrong adhesive can increase the amount of energy used to complete this process and/or contaminate the system altogether, but there are options.  Although Recycling Compatible Adhesives (RCA’s) were designed to minimize the effect of ‘stickies’ in paper recycling processes there has been significant discussion about whether this might also increase the efficiency and effectiveness of plastic container recycling. 
Choosing a lighter coat weight of adhesive, and/or an adhesive designed to ‘break away’ from a container during the regrind or washing process can also help.    There are literally thousands of adhesives available for label materials- simply asking your label supplier for a ‘stronger’ or ‘lighter’ adhesive isn’t going to get you the performance or recycling compatibility you’re after. 
Face stocks should be chosen wisely and this can be, in fact more important than adhesive selection.  PVC, polystyrene, vinyls, and polyesters should be avoided.  PET and HDPE might be good choices though eco-friendly options such as cellulosed-based biodegradable films and films made from minerals such as FiberStone™ paper made from calcium carbonate are better choices.
Rely on the expertise of your label supplier when specifying a label material for your application but don’t expect him to recommend an adhesive and face stock combination appropriate for recycling.  This topic is so new and, surprisingly hasn’t yet caught the eye or interest of the majority of label printers and print brokers.  If you can’t find a well informed, cutting edge eco-friendly label supplier you’ll need to take the time to educate your label printer on the recycling process a bit (send him this article!), or better yet… find a label printer that is interested enough in the environment to do the research and recommend the right product! 
If your printer comments, “You’ll have to choose between having a label that works and saving the environment- what’ll it be?”  RUN!  This is a sure sign that your label printer isn’t ready to assist you with adhesive selection and environmentally sound labels.  
So what IS the question you should be asking?   What ARE my options for eco-friendly labels?  Then sit down and listen for awhile- the list of options is, believe it or not more extensive than you might think!

When building one must consider the impact that O&M practices have on both the owner's bottom line and the tenants needs as well. Implementing a good O&M program is typically easy, and does not need to be a huge budget issue either. Companies are seeing a 5-20% energy savings when implementing a best-practice O&M program. You’ve invested time and money into getting a PCR bottle; you’ve avoided BPA & PVC, and have selected a container that works well in the recycling stream.   You may have even gone so far as to choose a white, clear or black container color so that it won’t contaminate the recycling stream (yes, black is a high demand color for PCR so it isn’t necessarily a bad choice).  Bravo, you’ve done your part…or have you? 
What could I possibly have missed you ask?  Decoration! Will you screen print this container, foil stamp or label it? What’s your best choice for the environment? Let’s discuss the options.
Screen printing- less material=less waste=more eco-friendly packaging right?  Not necessarily.  We’re finding that screen inks are often a red flag during plastic container sorting, or worse yet don’t get sorted out at all.  When this occurs there is a risk of contaminating or ‘tinting’ the recycling material.  This creates a lower quality recycled plastic container.   Ink removal also becomes a problem.  The very thing that attracts us to screen printed inks is the very reason why we might not want to use them- the ink adheres too well!
What about foil stamping?  There is no doubt that foil adds pop and shelf appeal to a container but is it ‘recyclable’?  Well, the folks with FSEA (Foil Stamping & Embossing Association) say that because there are no solvents, inks or vapors in foils it breaks down just fine in a landfill.  (http://www.fsea.com/Designersclub/DCenvironment.htm) If this is truly the case then foil stamping may be a viable option if you’re looking to create a container that will end up in a landfill but if you’re designing for recyclability however there are concerns that foil does contaminate regrind material.
So direct decoration is out…what are the other options?  Sleeves (shrink sleeves) are a great choice- sleeves printed on corn-based PLA or Eastman’s Embrace shrink films can be easily removed from plastic containers and discarded with other waste material.   To be effective however sleeves generally need to cover a large area (close to 100% of a container), thus increasing the amount of material you’ll need to source and… throw away!
All of this leads us to my preferred decoration method… labels!  “But labels have adhesive!” you say.  “Doesn’t adhesive gum up the works in a regrind operation?”  “Aren’t labels difficult to remove in a conventional recycling plant?  The answers to these questions are yes, yes, and yes, but… there are options that make this one of the most attractive decorating options. 
To understand how adhesive selection can affect this process one must first understand the plastic recycling process.
Plastic containers are recycled using several methods and a complete discussion here would chew up a dozen or more pages.  In a nutshell, there are generally three basic stages to this process:  Stage 1- Containers are sorted; Stage 2- Containers are ground into flake (also called regrind), labels and all, and the ‘lighter’ particles are blown or vacuumed out; Stage 3- Washing with water and chemicals to remove contaminants; Stage 4- additional air/vacuum separation, and drying; and, Stage 5- melting of the regrind and extruding this material through screens to filter out any left over, non plastic materials.
The wrong adhesive can increase the amount of energy used to complete this process and/or contaminate the system altogether, but there are options.  Although Recycling Compatible Adhesives (RCA’s) were designed to minimize the effect of ‘stickies’ in paper recycling processes there has been significant discussion about whether this might also increase the efficiency and effectiveness of plastic container recycling. 
Choosing a lighter coat weight of adhesive, and/or an adhesive designed to ‘break away’ from a container during the regrind or washing process can also help.    There are literally thousands of adhesives available for label materials- simply asking your label supplier for a ‘stronger’ or ‘lighter’ adhesive isn’t going to get you the performance or recycling compatibility you’re after. 
Face stocks should be chosen wisely and this can be, in fact more important than adhesive selection.  PVC, polystyrene, vinyls, and polyesters should be avoided.  PET and HDPE might be good choices though eco-friendly options such as cellulosed-based biodegradable films and films made from minerals such as FiberStone™ paper made from calcium carbonate are better choices.
Rely on the expertise of your label supplier when specifying a label material for your application but don’t expect him to recommend an adhesive and face stock combination appropriate for recycling.  This topic is so new and, surprisingly hasn’t yet caught the eye or interest of the majority of label printers and print brokers.  If you can’t find a well informed, cutting edge eco-friendly label supplier you’ll need to take the time to educate your label printer on the recycling process a bit (send him this article!), or better yet… find a label printer that is interested enough in the environment to do the research and recommend the right product! 
If your printer comments, “You’ll have to choose between having a label that works and saving the environment- what’ll it be?”  RUN!  This is a sure sign that your label printer isn’t ready to assist you with adhesive selection and environmentally sound labels.  
So what IS the question you should be asking?   What ARE my options for eco-friendly labels?  Then sit down and listen for awhile- the list of options is, believe it or not more extensive than you might think!

run it through a magnet to sort ferrous material then a crusher chopper then through a series of microwave emitters and thermal cameras it should be possible sort by temp according to the frequency of the emitter.

Plastic containers are recycled using several methods and a complete discussion here would chew up a dozen or more pages.  In a nutshell, there are generally three basic stages to this process:  Stage 1- Containers are sorted; Stage 2- Containers are ground into flake (also called regrind), labels and all, and the ‘lighter’ particles are blown or vacuumed out; Stage 3- Washing with water and chemicals to remove contaminants; Stage 4- additional air/vacuum separation, and drying; and, Stage 5- melting of the regrind and extruding this material through screens to filter out any left over, non plastic materials.
The wrong adhesive can increase the amount of energy used to complete this process and/or contaminate the system altogether, but there are options.  Although Recycling Compatible Adhesives (RCA’s) were designed to minimize the effect of ‘stickies’ in paper recycling processes there has been significant discussion about whether this might also increase the efficiency and effectiveness of plastic container recycling. 
Choosing a lighter coat weight of adhesive, and/or an adhesive designed to ‘break away’ from a container during the regrind or washing process can also help.    There are literally thousands of adhesives available for label materials- simply asking your label supplier for a ‘stronger’ or ‘lighter’ adhesive isn’t going to get you the performance or recycling compatibility you’re after. 
Face stocks should be chosen wisely and this can be, in fact more important than adhesive selection.  PVC, polystyrene, vinyls, and polyesters should be avoided.  PET and HDPE might be good choices though eco-friendly options such as cellulosed-based biodegradable films and films made from minerals such as FiberStone™ paper made from calcium carbonate are better choices.
Rely on the expertise of your label supplier when specifying a label material for your application but don’t expect him to recommend an adhesive and face stock combination appropriate for recycling.  This topic is so new and, surprisingly hasn’t yet caught the eye or interest of the majority of label printers and print brokers.  If you can’t find a well informed, cutting edge eco-friendly label supplier you’ll need to take the time to educate your label printer on the recycling process a bit (send him this article!), or better yet… find a label printer that is interested enough in the environment to do the research and recommend the right product! 
If your printer comments, “You’ll have to choose between having a label that works and saving the environment- what’ll it be?”  RUN!  This is a sure sign that your label printer isn’t ready to assist you with adhesive selection and environmentally sound labels.  
So what IS the question you should be asking?   What ARE my options for eco-friendly labels?  Then sit down and listen for awhile- the list of options is, believe it or not more extensive than you might think!

You’ve invested time and money into getting a PCR bottle; you’ve avoided BPA & PVC, and have selected a container that works well in the recycling stream.   You may have even gone so far as to choose a white, clear or black container color so that it won’t contaminate the recycling stream (yes, black is a high demand color for PCR so it isn’t necessarily a bad choice).  Bravo, you’ve done your part…or have you? 
What could I possibly have missed you ask?  Decoration! Will you screen print this container, foil stamp or label it? What’s your best choice for the environment? Let’s discuss the options.
Screen printing- less material=less waste=more eco-friendly packaging right?  Not necessarily.  We’re finding that screen inks are often a red flag during plastic container sorting, or worse yet don’t get sorted out at all.  When this occurs there is a risk of contaminating or ‘tinting’ the recycling material.  This creates a lower quality recycled plastic container.   Ink removal also becomes a problem.  The very thing that attracts us to screen printed inks is the very reason why we might not want to use them- the ink adheres too well!
What about foil stamping?  There is no doubt that foil adds pop and shelf appeal to a container but is it ‘recyclable’?  Well, the folks with FSEA (Foil Stamping & Embossing Association) say that because there are no solvents, inks or vapors in foils it breaks down just fine in a landfill.  (http://www.fsea.com/Designersclub/DCenvironment.htm) If this is truly the case then foil stamping may be a viable option if you’re looking to create a container that will end up in a landfill but if you’re designing for recyclability however there are concerns that foil does contaminate regrind material.
So direct decoration is out…what are the other options?  Sleeves (shrink sleeves) are a great choice- sleeves printed on corn-based PLA or Eastman’s Embrace shrink films can be easily removed from plastic containers and discarded with other waste material.   To be effective however sleeves generally need to cover a large area (close to 100% of a container), thus increasing the amount of material you’ll need to source and… throw away!
All of this leads us to my preferred decoration method… labels!  “But labels have adhesive!” you say.  “Doesn’t adhesive gum up the works in a regrind operation?”  “Aren’t labels difficult to remove in a conventional recycling plant?  The answers to these questions are yes, yes, and yes, but… there are options that make this one of the most attractive decorating options.

run it through a magnet to sort ferrous material then a crusher chopper then through a series of microwave emitters and thermal cameras it should be possible sort by temp according to the frequency of the emitter.

You’ve invested time and money into getting a PCR bottle; you’ve avoided BPA & PVC, and have selected a container that works well in the recycling stream.   You may have even gone so far as to choose a white, clear or black container color so that it won’t contaminate the recycling stream (yes, black is a high demand color for PCR so it isn’t necessarily a bad choice).  Bravo, you’ve done your part…or have you? 
What could I possibly have missed you ask?  Decoration! Will you screen print this container, foil stamp or label it? What’s your best choice for the environment? Let’s discuss the options.
Screen printing- less material=less waste=more eco-friendly packaging right?  Not necessarily.  We’re finding that screen inks are often a red flag during plastic container sorting, or worse yet don’t get sorted out at all.  When this occurs there is a risk of contaminating or ‘tinting’ the recycling material.  This creates a lower quality recycled plastic container.   Ink removal also becomes a problem.  The very thing that attracts us to screen printed inks is the very reason why we might not want to use them- the ink adheres too well!
What about foil stamping?  There is no doubt that foil adds pop and shelf appeal to a container but is it ‘recyclable’?  Well, the folks with FSEA (Foil Stamping & Embossing Association) say that because there are no solvents, inks or vapors in foils it breaks down just fine in a landfill.  (http://www.fsea.com/Designersclub/DCenvironment.htm) If this is truly the case then foil stamping may be a viable option if you’re looking to create a container that will end up in a landfill but if you’re designing for recyclability however there are concerns that foil does contaminate regrind material.
So direct decoration is out…what are the other options?  Sleeves (shrink sleeves) are a great choice- sleeves printed on corn-based PLA or Eastman’s Embrace shrink films can be easily removed from plastic containers and discarded with other waste material.   To be effective however sleeves generally need to cover a large area (close to 100% of a container), thus increasing the amount of material you’ll need to source and… throw away!
All of this leads us to my preferred decoration method… labels!  “But labels have adhesive!” you say.  “Doesn’t adhesive gum up the works in a regrind operation?”  “Aren’t labels difficult to remove in a conventional recycling plant?  The answers to these questions are yes, yes, and yes, but… there are options that make this one of the most attractive decorating options. 
To understand how adhesive selection can affect this process one must first understand the plastic recycling process.
Plastic containers are recycled using several methods and a complete discussion here would chew up a dozen or more pages.  In a nutshell, there are generally three basic stages to this process:  Stage 1- Containers are sorted; Stage 2- Containers are ground into flake (also called regrind), labels and all, and the ‘lighter’ particles are blown or vacuumed out; Stage 3- Washing with water and chemicals to remove contaminants; Stage 4- additional air/vacuum separation, and drying; and, Stage 5- melting of the regrind and extruding this material through screens to filter out any left over, non plastic materials.
The wrong adhesive can increase the amount of energy used to complete this process and/or contaminate the system altogether, but there are options.  Although Recycling Compatible Adhesives (RCA’s) were designed to minimize the effect of ‘stickies’ in paper recycling processes there has been significant discussion about whether this might also increase the efficiency and effectiveness of plastic container recycling. 
Choosing a lighter coat weight of adhesive, and/or an adhesive designed to ‘break away’ from a container during the regrind or washing process can also help.    There are literally thousands of adhesives available for label materials- simply asking your label supplier for a ‘stronger’ or ‘lighter’ adhesive isn’t going to get you the performance or recycling compatibility you’re after. 
Face stocks should be chosen wisely and this can be, in fact more important than adhesive selection.  PVC, polystyrene, vinyls, and polyesters should be avoided.  PET and HDPE might be good choices though eco-friendly options such as cellulosed-based biodegradable films and films made from minerals such as FiberStone™ paper made from calcium carbonate are better choices.
Rely on the expertise of your label supplier when specifying a label material for your application but don’t expect him to recommend an adhesive and face stock combination appropriate for recycling.  This topic is so new and, surprisingly hasn’t yet caught the eye or interest of the majority of label printers and print brokers.  If you can’t find a well informed, cutting edge eco-friendly label supplier you’ll need to take the time to educate your label printer on the recycling process a bit (send him this article!), or better yet… find a label printer that is interested enough in the environment to do the research and recommend the right product! 
If your printer comments, “You’ll have to choose between having a label that works and saving the environment- what’ll it be?”  RUN!  This is a sure sign that your label printer isn’t ready to assist you with adhesive selection and environmentally sound labels.  
So what IS the question you should be asking?   What ARE my options for eco-friendly labels?  Then sit down and listen for awhile- the list of options is, believe it or not more extensive than you might think!

There are different degrees of green building that offer some challenges as well. For instance, green building in a remodel condition would differ from a newly constructed home. Depending on what part of the construction process is being discussed we will have many opportunities to implement the green factor. From new building materials to new innovative methods, we can save money and make building healthier to build and occupy. The most overlooked green building design element is known as operations and maintenance practices. This would typically occur after the remodel or construction of the project. When building one must consider the impact that O&M practices have on both the owner's bottom line and the tenants needs as well. Implementing a good O&M program is typically easy, and does not need to be a huge budget issue either. Companies are seeing a 5-20% energy savings when implementing a best-practice O&M program. Basically these programs are educating the facilities employees/tenants to best utilize the energy usage by making better decisions throughout the day. By changing their daily habits and recognizing these people for their efforts, it is possible to sustain these savings for the long term. Green building design takes into consideration a vast amount of architectural elements. A lot of which are case by case design strategies which must be carefully planned out as not to miss a potential key savings or environmental benefit. You’ve invested time and money into getting a PCR bottle; you’ve avoided BPA & PVC, and have selected a container that works well in the recycling stream.   You may have even gone so far as to choose a white, clear or black container color so that it won’t contaminate the recycling stream (yes, black is a high demand color for PCR so it isn’t necessarily a bad choice).  Bravo, you’ve done your part…or have you? 
What could I possibly have missed you ask?  Decoration! Will you screen print this container, foil stamp or label it? What’s your best choice for the environment? Let’s discuss the options.
Screen printing- less material=less waste=more eco-friendly packaging right?  Not necessarily.  We’re finding that screen inks are often a red flag during plastic container sorting, or worse yet don’t get sorted out at all.  When this occurs there is a risk of contaminating or ‘tinting’ the recycling material.  This creates a lower quality recycled plastic container.   Ink removal also becomes a problem.  The very thing that attracts us to screen printed inks is the very reason why we might not want to use them- the ink adheres too well!
What about foil stamping?  There is no doubt that foil adds pop and shelf appeal to a container but is it ‘recyclable’?  Well, the folks with FSEA (Foil Stamping & Embossing Association) say that because there are no solvents, inks or vapors in foils it breaks down just fine in a landfill.  (http://www.fsea.com/Designersclub/DCenvironment.htm) If this is truly the case then foil stamping may be a viable option if you’re looking to create a container that will end up in a landfill but if you’re designing for recyclability however there are concerns that foil does contaminate regrind material.
So direct decoration is out…what are the other options?  Sleeves (shrink sleeves) are a great choice- sleeves printed on corn-based PLA or Eastman’s Embrace shrink films can be easily removed from plastic containers and discarded with other waste material.   To be effective however sleeves generally need to cover a large area (close to 100% of a container), thus increasing the amount of material you’ll need to source and… throw away!
All of this leads us to my preferred decoration method… labels!  “But labels have adhesive!” you say.  “Doesn’t adhesive gum up the works in a regrind operation?”  “Aren’t labels difficult to remove in a conventional recycling plant?  The answers to these questions are yes, yes, and yes, but… there are options that make this one of the most attractive decorating options. 
To understand how adhesive selection can affect this process one must first understand the plastic recycling process.
Plastic containers are recycled using several methods and a complete discussion here would chew up a dozen or more pages.  In a nutshell, there are generally three basic stages to this process:  Stage 1- Containers are sorted; Stage 2- Containers are ground into flake (also called regrind), labels and all, and the ‘lighter’ particles are blown or vacuumed out; Stage 3- Washing with water and chemicals to remove contaminants; Stage 4- additional air/vacuum separation, and drying; and, Stage 5- melting of the regrind and extruding this material through screens to filter out any left over, non plastic materials.
The wrong adhesive can increase the amount of energy used to complete this process and/or contaminate the system altogether, but there are options.  Although Recycling Compatible Adhesives (RCA’s) were designed to minimize the effect of ‘stickies’ in paper recycling processes there has been significant discussion about whether this might also increase the efficiency and effectiveness of plastic container recycling. 
Choosing a lighter coat weight of adhesive, and/or an adhesive designed to ‘break away’ from a container during the regrind or washing process can also help.    There are literally thousands of adhesives available for label materials- simply asking your label supplier for a ‘stronger’ or ‘lighter’ adhesive isn’t going to get you the performance or recycling compatibility you’re after. 
Face stocks should be chosen wisely and this can be, in fact more important than adhesive selection.  PVC, polystyrene, vinyls, and polyesters should be avoided.  PET and HDPE might be good choices though eco-friendly options such as cellulosed-based biodegradable films and films made from minerals such as FiberStone™ paper made from calcium carbonate are better choices.
Rely on the expertise of your label supplier when specifying a label material for your application but don’t expect him to recommend an adhesive and face stock combination appropriate for recycling.  This topic is so new and, surprisingly hasn’t yet caught the eye or interest of the majority of label printers and print brokers.  If you can’t find a well informed, cutting edge eco-friendly label supplier you’ll need to take the time to educate your label printer on the recycling process a bit (send him this article!), or better yet… find a label printer that is interested enough in the environment to do the research and recommend the right product! 
If your printer comments, “You’ll have to choose between having a label that works and saving the environment- what’ll it be?”  RUN!  This is a sure sign that your label printer isn’t ready to assist you with adhesive selection and environmentally sound labels.  
So what IS the question you should be asking?   What ARE my options for eco-friendly labels?  Then sit down and listen for awhile- the list of options is, believe it or not more extensive than you might think!

All of this leads us to my preferred decoration method… labels!  “But labels have adhesive!” you say.  “Doesn’t adhesive gum up the works in a regrind operation?”  “Aren’t labels difficult to remove in a conventional recycling plant?  The answers to these questions are yes, yes, and yes, but… there are options that make this one of the most attractive decorating options. 
To understand how adhesive selection can affect this process one must first understand the plastic recycling process.

Choosing a lighter coat weight of adhesive, and/or an adhesive designed to ‘break away’ from a container during the regrind or washing process can also help.    There are literally thousands of adhesives available for label materials- simply asking your label supplier for a ‘stronger’ or ‘lighter’ adhesive isn’t going to get you the performance or recycling compatibility you’re after. 
Face stocks should be chosen wisely and this can be, in fact more important than adhesive selection.  PVC, polystyrene, vinyls, and polyesters should be avoided.  PET and HDPE might be good choices though eco-friendly options such as cellulosed-based biodegradable films and films made from minerals such as FiberStone™ paper made from calcium carbonate are better choices.
Rely on the expertise of your label supplier when specifying a label material for your application but don’t expect him to recommend an adhesive and face stock combination appropriate for recycling.  This topic is so new and, surprisingly hasn’t yet caught the eye or interest of the majority of label printers and print brokers.  If you can’t find a well informed, cutting edge eco-friendly label supplier you’ll need to take the time to educate your label printer on the recycling process a bit (send him this article!), or better yet… find a label printer that is interested enough in the environment to do the research and recommend the right product! 
If your printer comments, “You’ll have to choose between having a label that works and saving the environment- what’ll it be?”  RUN!  This is a sure sign that your label printer isn’t ready to assist you with adhesive selection and environmentally sound labels.  
So what IS the question you should be asking?   What ARE my options for eco-friendly labels?  Then sit down and listen for awhile- the list of options is, believe it or not more extensive than you might think!

Plastic containers are recycled using several methods and a complete discussion here would chew up a dozen or more pages.  In a nutshell, there are generally three basic stages to this process:  Stage 1- Containers are sorted; Stage 2- Containers are ground into flake (also called regrind), labels and all, and the ‘lighter’ particles are blown or vacuumed out; Stage 3- Washing with water and chemicals to remove contaminants; Stage 4- additional air/vacuum separation, and drying; and, Stage 5- melting of the regrind and extruding this material through screens to filter out any left over, non plastic materials.
The wrong adhesive can increase the amount of energy used to complete this process and/or contaminate the system altogether, but there are options.  Although Recycling Compatible Adhesives (RCA’s) were designed to minimize the effect of ‘stickies’ in paper recycling processes there has been significant discussion about whether this might also increase the efficiency and effectiveness of plastic container recycling. 
Choosing a lighter coat weight of adhesive, and/or an adhesive designed to ‘break away’ from a container during the regrind or washing process can also help.    There are literally thousands of adhesives available for label materials- simply asking your label supplier for a ‘stronger’ or ‘lighter’ adhesive isn’t going to get you the performance or recycling compatibility you’re after. 
Face stocks should be chosen wisely and this can be, in fact more important than adhesive selection.  PVC, polystyrene, vinyls, and polyesters should be avoided.  PET and HDPE might be good choices though eco-friendly options such as cellulosed-based biodegradable films and films made from minerals such as FiberStone™ paper made from calcium carbonate are better choices.
Rely on the expertise of your label supplier when specifying a label material for your application but don’t expect him to recommend an adhesive and face stock combination appropriate for recycling.  This topic is so new and, surprisingly hasn’t yet caught the eye or interest of the majority of label printers and print brokers.  If you can’t find a well informed, cutting edge eco-friendly label supplier you’ll need to take the time to educate your label printer on the recycling process a bit (send him this article!), or better yet… find a label printer that is interested enough in the environment to do the research and recommend the right product! 
If your printer comments, “You’ll have to choose between having a label that works and saving the environment- what’ll it be?”  RUN!  This is a sure sign that your label printer isn’t ready to assist you with adhesive selection and environmentally sound labels.  
So what IS the question you should be asking?   What ARE my options for eco-friendly labels?  Then sit down and listen for awhile- the list of options is, believe it or not more extensive than you might think!

You’ve invested time and money into getting a PCR bottle; you’ve avoided BPA & PVC, and have selected a container that works well in the recycling stream.   You may have even gone so far as to choose a white, clear or black container color so that it won’t contaminate the recycling stream (yes, black is a high demand color for PCR so it isn’t necessarily a bad choice).  Bravo, you’ve done your part…or have you? 
What could I possibly have missed you ask?  Decoration! Will you screen print this container, foil stamp or label it? What’s your best choice for the environment? Let’s discuss the options.
Screen printing- less material=less waste=more eco-friendly packaging right?  Not necessarily.  We’re finding that screen inks are often a red flag during plastic container sorting, or worse yet don’t get sorted out at all.  When this occurs there is a risk of contaminating or ‘tinting’ the recycling material.  This creates a lower quality recycled plastic container.   Ink removal also becomes a problem.  The very thing that attracts us to screen printed inks is the very reason why we might not want to use them- the ink adheres too well!
What about foil stamping?  There is no doubt that foil adds pop and shelf appeal to a container but is it ‘recyclable’?  Well, the folks with FSEA (Foil Stamping & Embossing Association) say that because there are no solvents, inks or vapors in foils it breaks down just fine in a landfill.  (http://www.fsea.com/Designersclub/DCenvironment.htm) If this is truly the case then foil stamping may be a viable option if you’re looking to create a container that will end up in a landfill but if you’re designing for recyclability however there are concerns that foil does contaminate regrind material.
So direct decoration is out…what are the other options?  Sleeves (shrink sleeves) are a great choice- sleeves printed on corn-based PLA or Eastman’s Embrace shrink films can be easily removed from plastic containers and discarded with other waste material.   To be effective however sleeves generally need to cover a large area (close to 100% of a container), thus increasing the amount of material you’ll need to source and… throw away!
All of this leads us to my preferred decoration method… labels!  “But labels have adhesive!” you say.  “Doesn’t adhesive gum up the works in a regrind operation?”  “Aren’t labels difficult to remove in a conventional recycling plant?  The answers to these questions are yes, yes, and yes, but… there are options that make this one of the most attractive decorating options.

run it through a magnet to sort ferrous material then a crusher chopper then through a series of microwave emitters and thermal cameras it should be possible sort by temp according to the frequency of the emitter.

Green building designs are eco-friendly designs that help sustain natural resources while reducing one's carbon footprint on the environment. Typically, a green home is a home designed which uses less energy by means of incorporating greater insulation in the house, use of LED energy conserving lights as well as maximizing natural ventilation so as not to depend on Air conditioning. A typical green house is also designed to collect all grey and black water from toilets, showers and washing machines to feed into a recycling tank where hard solids are naturally broken down and purified water is the end product. This recycled purified water can be reused back into the garden or back into the house for flushing toilets.

Green building designs also make use of sustainable building materials. The windows and doors when left open allow homeowners to enjoy fresh, natural air thus reducing their dependence on air conditioners 24/7.

Green houses that are located in warmer regions such as Costa Rica have heavily insulated attics or roofs to prevent any heat from entering inside the house. The placement of windows is key in living in the tropics as the majority of sun exposure during the day is on the southern and western walls, thereby typically south facing walls receive minimal window coverage. Typical green houses in Costa Rica are designed to have covered terraces, porches, and patios as to maximize shade and take advantage of outdoor living.

Green building designs even incorporate a variety of plants and trees in courtyards and even sometimes inside a house. Trees help reduce the temperature around the house by several degrees thus ultimately making the house more energy efficient.

It would not be wrong to say that the benefits of green building design go beyond the eco-friendly aspect. Green homes have very practical economical benefits as well as enhanced lifestyle rewards. Free-flowing natural air, ample use of natural light and unobstructed views to the outdoors offered by green home building designs actually improve an individual's health and productivity.

You’ve invested time and money into getting a PCR bottle; you’ve avoided BPA & PVC, and have selected a container that works well in the recycling stream.   You may have even gone so far as to choose a white, clear or black container color so that it won’t contaminate the recycling stream (yes, black is a high demand color for PCR so it isn’t necessarily a bad choice).  Bravo, you’ve done your part…or have you? 
What could I possibly have missed you ask?  Decoration! Will you screen print this container, foil stamp or label it? What’s your best choice for the environment? Let’s discuss the options.
Screen printing- less material=less waste=more eco-friendly packaging right?  Not necessarily.  We’re finding that screen inks are often a red flag during plastic container sorting, or worse yet don’t get sorted out at all.  When this occurs there is a risk of contaminating or ‘tinting’ the recycling material.  This creates a lower quality recycled plastic container.   Ink removal also becomes a problem.  The very thing that attracts us to screen printed inks is the very reason why we might not want to use them- the ink adheres too well!
What about foil stamping?  There is no doubt that foil adds pop and shelf appeal to a container but is it ‘recyclable’?  Well, the folks with FSEA (Foil Stamping & Embossing Association) say that because there are no solvents, inks or vapors in foils it breaks down just fine in a landfill.  (http://www.fsea.com/Designersclub/DCenvironment.htm) If this is truly the case then foil stamping may be a viable option if you’re looking to create a container that will end up in a landfill but if you’re designing for recyclability however there are concerns that foil does contaminate regrind material.
So direct decoration is out…what are the other options?  Sleeves (shrink sleeves) are a great choice- sleeves printed on corn-based PLA or Eastman’s Embrace shrink films can be easily removed from plastic containers and discarded with other waste material.   To be effective however sleeves generally need to cover a large area (close to 100% of a container), thus increasing the amount of material you’ll need to source and… throw away!
All of this leads us to my preferred decoration method… labels!  “But labels have adhesive!” you say.  “Doesn’t adhesive gum up the works in a regrind operation?”  “Aren’t labels difficult to remove in a conventional recycling plant?  The answers to these questions are yes, yes, and yes, but… there are options that make this one of the most attractive decorating options. 
To understand how adhesive selection can affect this process one must first understand the plastic recycling process.
Plastic containers are recycled using several methods and a complete discussion here would chew up a dozen or more pages.  In a nutshell, there are generally three basic stages to this process:  Stage 1- Containers are sorted; Stage 2- Containers are ground into flake (also called regrind), labels and all, and the ‘lighter’ particles are blown or vacuumed out; Stage 3- Washing with water and chemicals to remove contaminants; Stage 4- additional air/vacuum separation, and drying; and, Stage 5- melting of the regrind and extruding this material through screens to filter out any left over, non plastic materials.
The wrong adhesive can increase the amount of energy used to complete this process and/or contaminate the system altogether, but there are options.  Although Recycling Compatible Adhesives (RCA’s) were designed to minimize the effect of ‘stickies’ in paper recycling processes there has been significant discussion about whether this might also increase the efficiency and effectiveness of plastic container recycling. 
Choosing a lighter coat weight of adhesive, and/or an adhesive designed to ‘break away’ from a container during the regrind or washing process can also help.    There are literally thousands of adhesives available for label materials- simply asking your label supplier for a ‘stronger’ or ‘lighter’ adhesive isn’t going to get you the performance or recycling compatibility you’re after. 
Face stocks should be chosen wisely and this can be, in fact more important than adhesive selection.  PVC, polystyrene, vinyls, and polyesters should be avoided.  PET and HDPE might be good choices though eco-friendly options such as cellulosed-based biodegradable films and films made from minerals such as FiberStone™ paper made from calcium carbonate are better choices.
Rely on the expertise of your label supplier when specifying a label material for your application but don’t expect him to recommend an adhesive and face stock combination appropriate for recycling.  This topic is so new and, surprisingly hasn’t yet caught the eye or interest of the majority of label printers and print brokers.  If you can’t find a well informed, cutting edge eco-friendly label supplier you’ll need to take the time to educate your label printer on the recycling process a bit (send him this article!), or better yet… find a label printer that is interested enough in the environment to do the research and recommend the right product! 
If your printer comments, “You’ll have to choose between having a label that works and saving the environment- what’ll it be?”  RUN!  This is a sure sign that your label printer isn’t ready to assist you with adhesive selection and environmentally sound labels.  
So what IS the question you should be asking?   What ARE my options for eco-friendly labels?  Then sit down and listen for awhile- the list of options is, believe it or not more extensive than you might think!

Now that we all understand the definition of green building, let's take a closer look at a few elements which will comprise the term green building. There are different degrees of green building that offer some challenges as well. For instance, green building in a remodel condition would differ from a newly constructed home. Depending on what part of the construction process is being discussed we will have many opportunities to implement the green factor. From new building materials to new innovative methods, we can save money and make building healthier to build and occupy. The most overlooked green building design element is known as operations and maintenance practices. This would typically occur after the remodel or construction of the project. When building one must consider the impact that O&M practices have on both the owner's bottom line and the tenants needs as well. Implementing a good O&M program is typically easy, and does not need to be a huge budget issue either. Companies are seeing a 5-20% energy savings when implementing a best-practice O&M program. Basically these programs are educating the facilities employees/tenants to best utilize the energy usage by making better decisions throughout the day. By changing their daily habits and recognizing these people for their efforts, it is possible to sustain these savings for the long term. Green building design takes into consideration a vast amount of architectural elements. A lot of which are case by case design strategies which must be carefully planned out as not to miss a potential key savings or environmental benefit. Don't get me wrong, I've written many an article about the coming boon in Green Living Design and how we, as Designers, must be at the forefront of the movement.  With that being said, I find that many of my clients often look at me with that "Deer in the headlight" look when I even casually mention the Green aspect of a Design element for their new home or addition. 

It is not that most folks don't care; They do.  It is that most feel that they are being handed a bill of goods because something is trendy or fashionable at the moment and can not have any direct implications on their lives in the present.  "Going Green" is something that the Hollywood crowd does, not the average consumer. 

That used to be true and, yes, in some quarters of "Green Design, " it still is.  However, I have found that there are common elements that, if mentioned correctly, everybody can get behind from a Green standpoint.

So, what are the basic elements of some solid Green Living Design that most can see using in their lives?  I will touch on four that if you are remodeling or building, can be done in that part of the design; Heating/Air units, HVAC, Wall design, Insulation elements and, finally, Door and Window design elements.

There has been an emergence of systems that use a "Forced Air" feature known as radiant space heaters.  Many builders like the aspect of forced heating in that it eliminates a huge chunk of the duct work that must be used in a home design.  Some builders, and many fire departments, like the aspect of a lower amount of duct work as it sometimes can aid in the spread of fires in a home.

Wall design has become something of interest, as of late, with the rising cost in energy prices.  A lot of builders are liking the idea of walls that are a bit thicker in an exterior build.  Many are looking at 12-inch-thick exterior walls with a high R value, which is the rating given a substance's thermal resistance.  That gives you better energy values, and combined with better Green materials that go inside the walls, this could save a homeowner substantial money in overall energy cost.

Insulation elements continue to increase in the "Green" factor with some great cellulose insulation options available to consumers.  Some of these ratings are as high as R-60, in some cases, and can greatly reduce the cost of running your home when it comes to energy.

Finally, doors and windows.  This category is the one that seems to get the lease resistance from homeowners looking at new design elements.  It seems that the industry has really taken the lead in this category by just explaining to the consumer, in terms that make total sense, that these design features can and will save them money.  It seems that most homeowners have had a face-to-face confrontation with the dastardly windows and doors in their homes and immediately "Get it" when it comes to dealing with them. Still, some of the better energy saving features come at a price and can make many a home owner grimace when handed the bill.

So, there you are.  Four design elements that are loaded with "Green Value," as I like to call it.   Excellent ways to be a little more conscious about the environment in any Interior Design elements that you are considering and  will help you move towards that ever elusive Green Living Design.
