Did you know that interest in gardening is increasing at a rapid rate? The increase is due to the under 35 set who is said to have a greater interest in the environment and going green. The primary field of gardening interest of Generation Y is organic gardening.

There has been a lot written about organic gardening in the mainstream media and it has become a very popular topic with many people around the world, not just youth. With so many more health and environmentally conscious people around today, organic gardening has become quite popular. With its explosive growth in the past decade, organic gardening has gained acceptance in mainstream society. No longer the realm of hippies and health fanatics, organic produce is now consumed by the general public and readily available in large chain grocery stores.

Organic produce has become a featured item at many large-chain grocery stores so it is no wonder people want to know more about organic gardening. Some would even grow their own organic produce if they only knew how or had the time or had the space for it.

But do we really know what organic gardening is.

My definition might differ from yours, but to me, organic gardening means raising vegetables, flowers and plants without harmful artificial chemical herbicides, pesticides and fertilizers. I don’t think it is possible to be one hundred percent organic and I certainly don’t think the average hobby gardener should worry about meeting whatever the commercial gardening standards are in their particular area. But I do truly believe that people can enjoy a healthier life by including more organic gardening in their lives and more organic produce on their tables.

So how do we go about creating an organic gardening project that will actually result in healthy harvests of pure healthy foods? How do we nurture a sick planet back to health and assure a brighter future for ourselves and for future generations to come? Well, one way is to stop using so many chemical poisons in general and in our food in particular. It has been said that our food can contain up to 450 different added unnecessary and even dangerous chemicals.

By simply removing artificial chemicals from the gardening equation, we can improve our health. We can be successful at organic gardening without the use of chemicals through building the soil and mimicking nature’s ways to do the rest. This doesn’t mean that we don’t adapt them, but in general, if we follow nature’s lead and use the wisdom that the environment has accumulated over the course of Earth’s history, we can be very successful in our organic gardening efforts.

Nature is diverse and resilient. It will always fight back to reclaim its rightful place in our ecosystem. Our agriculture will be so much more robust with organic gardening. Poly-culture and lack of pesticides, herbicides and chemical fertilizers make organic gardening the only sane choice for our own health and the health of the planet. Try organic gardening today.

Question by jsblowe: What are the major organic products when 1 equivalent of acetic formic anhydride reacts with 1 equivalent of m

Best answer:

Answer by Chad
First ask yourself what is going to happen. The MeOH will react with the C=O to give an ester and the other carbonyl will leave as the acid. The question is which C=O will the MeOH react with: The formyl or acetate?

1. If it reacts with the formyl carbonyl, the products would be methyl formate and acetic acid (a and c)

2. If MeOH reacts with the acetyl carbonyl, the products woudl be methyl acetate and formic acid (b and d)

Looking at the remaining choices (e and f) are unlikely to form in the reaction so the question is which side of the mixed anhydride does the MeOH react with…its a good question and I am not sure, but if I had to guess, I would say 1 to give products (a and c) based on sterics.

That is a guess. Hope that helps.

Article by Kolawole Olambiwonnu

Nowadays, more and more people are getting into organic gardening. Although organic gardening applies to all forms of plants, most often when you say organic gardening product, the first things that come to mind are vegetables and fruits. But, products of the organic way also cover other plants like ornamental and flowery plants. Regardless, may it be growing vegetables, flowers, or even fruits, people are trying to reap the benefits of the organic way.

Organic gardening is a science. It is not just simply planting the seeds and waiting for the plant to grow, flower or bear fruit. The process involves careful planning since organic gardening follows the natural principles of nature in soil cultivation, managing pests, and propagating plants.

However, don’t be daunted since we only mention that organic gardening is a science to emphasize that we don’t just let nature do the work. We grow our plants or crops by applying a system that is approved by Mother Nature. That’s the essence of it.

There are a lot of elements involved in organic gardening but for our discussion we will focus on general aspects of soil cultivation and pest management.

To succeed in organic gardening, we need to keep the soil healthy. You can’t use chemical fertilizers, obviously, since it negates the very purpose of the activity and also the long term use of such fertilizers damages the natural components of the soil. Composting is an essential part of organic gardening. Composts have various benefits for your plants. One, it provides the needed nutrients and improves the overall soil constitution. Second, the compost can help the soil retain more water which means less time spraying your plants with a garden hose.

Aside from proper soil cultivation, the problem that is dreaded by most growers is pest control. From flying to crawling, from walking to boring, managing pests is a vital key in producing quality organic produce or maintaining a healthy organic garden.

In an organic garden, the plants should be able to handle the damage of ordinary insect attacks or damage from common diseases. However, if you feel you need to support your plants there are several ways you could do so. You can spray your garden or plants with solutions that are friendly to the environment such as diluted soapy water or organic sprays from naturally occurring insecticide plants, the neem tree for instance.

Or another way is to “equip” your garden with friendly insects. You can find out what kind of pests are there in your garden and look for its natural enemies. This way, population of pests can be controlled by your own army of insects. By introducing natural predators, you will no longer fear of pests getting immune from insecticides. But, pest management for an organic garden really involves combinations of techniques.

With proper care, and the right techniques, your organic garden can be sustained. You can be assured that the soil is cared for and healthy, plants will be able to pollinate effectively, water will be conserved, and plants in general will survive longer.

All these elements when combined together will result to a hefty harvest of an organic garden product of your choice. Your vegetables or fruits will be fresher than before. You will have a garden with vibrant and healthy flowers.

Article by Paul Empey

Regular gardening and organic gardening isn’t that much different except you use no syntheic fertilizers or pesticides. This does result in different methods to control disease, insects, and weeds. Choosing to grow backyard garden using organic gardening methods will require more attention to the soil ph, nutrients and many needs of your plants and vegetables.

The best organic garden focuses on the soil. You willl need to add organic matter to the soil regularly to make the soil organically productive. Good compost is critical ingredient to grow a backyard garden organically for the health and well being of your plants. You need compost made from leaves, dead flowers, vegetable scraps, fruit rinds, grass clippings, manure and many other things are just part of your gardening methods.

You will see that the best soil has a dark color, is full of worms and has a sweet smell. Sometime the organic garden soil needs more natural additives than regular compost will provide such as greensand, bonemeal and rock phosphates. A simple soil test you can have done at the garden center will let you know the ph and what nutrients you will need and the best plants to grow.

There is one thing though that can make the most dedicated gardener reach for spray pesticide is the threat of insects to the garden. There are preventative measures you can take against insects that will harm your garden. One thing that can be done is to keep your plants healthy and not too dry or wet because insects will attack unhealthy plants and healthy plants can outgrow minor insect damage.

It is a good ideal to have a variety of plants so that a pest of a particular plant type doesn’t take out the entire organic garden. The best way to defend against insects is make your garden a friendly place for insect predators like ladybugs, birds, frogs, and lizards. This can be done by keping a water source nearby and by growing plants that attrack insects that feed on nector. Some other options are sticky traps , barriers, and plant collars.

Another method to avoid disease while organic gardening is to grow disease resistant plants and plant them in their prime condition. Many diseases can also spread because of too much moisture and bad aeration so the site of an organic garden and the way it is watered can help against disease.

Weeds can be a frustrating and annoying part to grow backyard garden organically. Organic gardening mulch can make a good barrier and for better protection you can put down a layer of newspaper or cardboard under the mulch. Corn meal gluten can slow the growth of weeds if done before planting.

One of the best methods is still the oldest but most effective method of hoeing and hand pulling has always worked. Stay persistent, mulch well, hoe and pull weeds and in a few seasons you will have the weed problem beat.

Organic gardening is a effective healthy way to grow your vegetables. It may require a little extra care to assure that your plants be free of pest and disease. If taken care of properly can be as healthy as possible. To grow backyard garden using organic gardening methods does take a little extra time and care than normal but is well worth the time for an organic healthy harvest.

Article by Gerardas Norkus

Because of an alarming condition of our atmosphere these days and the impact of technological innovations have on our health, everything seems to be resorting to a more viable option – organics. From foods to even hobbies like gardening, organics had definitely taken the limelight.

Nowadays, one of the gradually emerging lucrative activity for hobbyist, and environmentalist for that matter, is organic gardening. It slowly replaces the traditional type of gardening that involves harmful chemicals that speed up the destruction of our Ozone layer.

Organic gardening, basically, refers to one type of gardening that deviates from the customary use of chemicals like fertilizers and pesticides. Because of these, many agriculturists contend that engaging into organics gardening makes one in synchrony with nature.

The basic notion of organics gardening boils down to the fact that it is best to feed the soil and not the plant. Thus, we can hypothetically say that, in organic gardening, it is the soil that needs more nourishment than the plants, or simply because it’s from the soil that the plants obtain their nourishment. A healthy soil yields a healthy plant, so to speak.

In organic gardening, the basic concept of “fertilizing” the soil is to use organic materials like composts and manures. When fertilizing the soil, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you use fertilizers. In fact, fertilizers were primarily denoted as anything that increases the soil’s fertility.

Hence, organic gardening is a way of going back to the basics, the traditional use of basic fertilizers that increases the soil’s capability to enrich the plant. In this manner, the grower uses minerals like calcium coming from the fossils of dead animals, nitrogen from legumes or manures, phosphorus from bones of dead animals, and potassium from wood ashes.

On the other hand, organic growers also consider

composts of other living things like vegetables or plants when incorporating the idea of organic gardening. Its by-product is known as the humus, which is definitely good for the soil. In organic gardening, humus is an important element in plant production because it contains cellulose that performs like a sponge and retains moisture in the soil so that it will be made available for the plants as they grow.

Moreover, organic gardening incorporates the traditional way of controlling animal pests like physical removal of insects, crop rotation, interplanting, and introduction of prey species. These methods lessen the growth of insects and curb the multiplication of pests. It also impedes the development of diseases that were emphasized by “agribusiness monocropping”.

In addition, organic gardening employs the typical suppression of weeds and vegetables pests without having to opt for herbicides. In this organic gardening method of removing weeds, “mulches” are placed on the weeds to prevent them from obtaining the amount of light they need in order to grow. These mulches act as barriers for weeds and vegetable pests. They come in different forms like leaves, stones, wood, or straw.

In general, the technique of organic gardening lies on two agricultural concept: permaculture and biodynamic agriculture.

Permaculture or permanent culture refers to that area in agriculture wherein certain ecological principle, “shared ethics” like earth care and people care, and design tools are used so as to gain sustainable development in plants. On the other hand, biodynamics agriculture is composed of a biological at the same time sustainable system of agricultural assembly.

With these two concepts, we can safely derive the fundamental idea of organic gardening as a system based on environmental, sustainable, and ethical principles of man.

So, we now know for a fact that organic gardening is definitely a lot better than what science and technology teaches us these days.

The only drawback is that it is science that taught us the basic ways on how to care for the environment in the first place, and yet, it is also the same mentor who is teaching us how to employ concepts that eventually leads to nature’s destruction. Isn’t it ironic?
