Our Ranking System

You will see in our posted commentaries reference to the ‘rank’ of an artist or band. This has nothing to do with the value of an artist’s work, or how much we recommend them, but is purely based on the monthly listens they get on Spotify.

Here is our arbitrary breakdown:

Rank based on Monthly listens on Spotify, by artist

  • Rank 1 - 10,000,000+
  • Rank 2 - 5,000,000 - 10,000,000
  • Rank 3 - 1,000,000 - 5,000,000
  • Rank 4 - 500,000 - 1,000,000
  • Rank 5 - 250,000 - 500,000
  • Rank 6 - 100,00 - 250,000
  • Rank 7 - 50,000 - 100,000
  • Rank 8 - 20,000 - 50,000
  • Rank 9 - 10,000 - 20,000
  • Rank 10 - less than 10,000

In general then

  • artists of rank 10 and 9 are hardly known (Outdoor Type); sometimes they are criminally under-rated artists at the end of their career but still active today (Roy Loney, once of the Flamin’ Groovies)
  • artists of rank 8 and 7 may have a bunch of dedicated fans or a cult following (Korey Dane, Deep Sea Arcade)
  • artists of rank 5 and 6 may be about to break into the big time, or have been on the edge of a breakthrough for a while (Devotchka, Julia Jacklin, Bronze Radio Return), or be classic acts - still current or no longer with us - with nostalgic value (Big Country, Australian Crawl)
  • artists of rank 4 and above, with half a million listens a month or more are well established modern artists, and have usually had at least one singles chart success and millions of Youtube views for their videos. Or, they are the top classic acts who my no longer exist but still have a huge fanbase. Some examples – rank 4: Foxygen, Angel Olson; rank 3: Arcade Fire, Chumbawamba; Rank 2: Bob Dylan; rank 1: Fleetwood Mac, Beatles, Rolling Stones, Kanye West

In general then In our playlists and posts we will be concentrating on artist of rank 6 and higher, with the aim of introducing new talent to our readers, but we won’t completely ignore the top acts from the past and the present.
